Things have been proceeding fairly well in the clan wars. My total score is 309, with just under a 2:1 W/L ratio, which is pretty good as my team consists only of twelve fighters.
I was pretty excited when unknown fighter MrPapier asked to join the clan. They’re an active participant, unlike the Temenos and TheGilgamesh duo that joined, ranked up once, and then quit. But, even though those characters are abandoned, I can use them in the clan battles.
A year or so ago, someone joined, leveled their fighter up to about level 6 and quit, and I booted them from the clan. That was a mistake I bitterly regretted, because in the clan wars, what you most need are bodies. They could be active and be high level that that would be better, but a lot of battles are just won or lost on attrition.
Take the battle against Clan Romania. They have nineteen fighters to my twelve, I didn’t win any fights, but I still won the battle. Why? I just sent one fighter out for each battle and they sent the max, seven, each time. I won because they ran out of fighters.
Attrition doesn’t always work.
If a clan has more then 28 fighters, they can send in seven each time and unless I actually try to win some of these battles, they will hit the four win limit which wins them the whole battle. In these cases, I just try my best to win the first fight with all my best fighters, and then just let the inevitable happen. I got a win in, I made a point.
The other sort of loss is the fun kind, where I am playing against a clan leader who is also playing strategically. If they have an overwhelming number of fighters, well, they’re going to win anyway. But if they send out just one or two fighters for the first fight, and I send out my normal one, then I know we’re in for a real battle. The best kind. If they have around the same number of fighters as we do in Les Perdants, we’re each trying to gauge what the other does. I’m looking at their roster every day, seeing who they’ve sent out and who they’ve reserved, each of us trying to get the required four wins before running out of fighters.
The fight against absyntheus last September was a perfect example. That clan has fifteen fighters, mine twelve.
Fight 1: I send out level 8 TheGilgamesh, they send out a full slate of seven fighters and easily win. I am down to eleven fighters, they are now down to eight. I have the advantage.
Fight 2: I send out level 11 Lochinvar, they send out a level 11 fighter as well. Now I know that the opposing clan leader is actually playing. I win this fight, so we’re 1-1, I have ten fighters in reserve, they have seven.
Fight 3: I expect they will try and figure out how hard I’m going to fight. I need to win fights, but I need to win them with as few fighters as possible. I send out three fighters, they send out two, score is 2-1 and I have seven fighters and they have five.
Fight 4: I send three fighters, they send four of their five of their remaining. That was a mistake on their part. They would have known I wasn’t going to send all seven of mine. They win, tying it up at 2-2, but I have four fighters left, including my big guns, and they have just one.
Fight 5: I send three of my remaining fighters against their one, and win 3-2, with them out of fighters while I still have one left.
Clans Les Perdants and absyntheus were matched up again just two weeks later, and this time they had my measure and played strategically from the start. We had a six fight battle that I lost, 2-4. But it was a really fun time. Their fighter advantage, not squandered in the first turn, made all the difference.
Plenty of chance still to join La Brute (yes, you can play it in English) and join my clan. Or make one of your own, and maybe we’ll face each other in the arena some day 🙂
