I don't think there's any tool I, as a programmer, rely upon more than source code control, specifically GitHub these days.
It's saved me from sooooooo many disasters. Just had to revert a bit of my daily blogroll code and guess what, I could just look through the Github history for the file, grab what I needed, done.
I haven't used it for writing, but I could and probably should.
