Atari’s next retro console is… the INTELLIVISION?

So, this was the big reveal they needed my phone number for yesterday. The Intellivision.

BACK IN THE DAY… Intellivision was the Atari 2600's big rival. Slightly better specs, way better sports games, they had famous journalist George Plimpton to hawk it (for some reason). I had no idea who he was when I was a kid, he was just the Intellivision guy.

Eventually through sheer weight of being first to market, Atari 2600 won, a bittersweet victory as it helped kill the first generation of home video game consoles soon after.

So it is with a real sense of irony that, after an unsuccessful resurrection by the WORLD'S BEST AND MOST FAMOUS VIDEO GAME COMPOSER Tommy Tallarico, the brand that killed it the first time is finally re-animating it as a "mini" console, with 45 built in games, overlays for their famous controllers, and apparently no easy way to use your existing Intellivision games in the system.

The actual Intellivision consoles are still around and not that rare, but this one will connect to modern monitors and you won't have to haunt used game stores for the games. The list of included games includes all the ones I'd want.

Will I get it? I don't think so. I REALLY don't need more consoles at this point (but I'm going to be getting them anyway). These 1970s/1980s games don't really hold up, so unless your nostalgia demands it, I don't know how necessary it is.

I remember the Intellivision. I even got the George Plimpton ads because my father had a copy of his book, “Paper Lion” sitting around the house. A friend up the street had one when it came out and it was clearly a “better” console that the 2600. But by that point I had had a 2600 for two years and was saving my money for a computer, either an Apple II or an Atari 400/800 because I had already been exposed to the power of PC gaming.

Oh, and I just remembered, Alan Alda played George Plimpton in the movie made from his book “Paper Lion.” That bit of trivia was stuck in my head somewhere. I only remember the last few minutes of the movie where Alan Alda gets to go on field during a game to play the final down or something like that.

I knew he’d written a book, but nope, just know him from the commercials šŸ™‚ Surprised they’d let an old guy like that on the field, sounds like he’d be, like, dead pretty soon.

This is a really cool move by Atari—bringing back the Intellivision with modern touches while keeping its classic charm. It’s exciting to see such a legendary console get a fresh lease on life for retro fans
